Bridges and letters in Amsterdam


Round the city of Amsterdam, crossing the grachten - many of the bridges have their names displayed with ‘De Amsterdamse Brugletters’.

I 2004 skrev Piet Scheuders i "Verkennigen" om brobogstaverne:
Specielt typisk for Amsterdam er de broer, der blev brugt eller renoveret mellem 1910 og 1950, det tidspunkt, hvor arkitekterne Van der Mey, Kramer og Berlage leverede design til Publieke Werken (offentlige arbejder).
Skriftdesignet er et typisk arkitektbogstav, passer til den aktuelle stil, men ikke specielt raffineret typografisk, og bogstaverne er tydeligvis beregnet til at blive placeret ved siden af hinanden på bedste beskub.
At resultatet er ikke altid er særligt kønt, er indlysende blandt andet på det nyeste skilt på B. Bijvoetbrug mellem Stopera og Staalstraat over Zwanenburgwal.
